Mission 003

Operation GERBOISE

Session 15

Session Date: 26 April 2012

Players: Brad, Braon, Lenora, TJ

Location: In Ekker, Algeria

Game Date: 24 August

Game Time: 1300

  • The group travels south from Ain Salah toIn Ekker. The In Ekker mountain where the French conducted nuclear tests in the 1960s rises up abruptly out of the barren landscape. Black, greasy smoke drifts up from the central portion of the mountains, indicating human activity.
  • The group decides to investigate a small gas station, which is situated near the ruins of an old French base camp. The gas station is manned by two Algerian men. The attendant who meets the group is unfriendly and suspicious of the group. He pretends not to understand Marcus and ignores questions about activity at the nearby mountain.
  • Suspecting the attendant may be working for Red Sickle, Martin convinces Marcus to shoot out the phone line leading to the gas station. When the attendants come out to investigate, the group convinces them that their cargo truck is backfired due to mechanical trouble.
  • The group heads south, finds an old road that skirts around the southwestern side of the In Ekker mountains, and eventually decides to leave their truck behind so they can continue up the mountainside on foot. Jack stays behind to tend to the still seriously wounded Mossad agent.
  • After a couple hours of climbing the mountain, the group comes to a peak that provides a good vantage point. Down below, nestled between two of the mountains’ ridge lines, is a newly constructed base camp and a massive excavator. Through his high-powered scope, Marcus takes note of activity at the camp. The camp consists of a combination of military equipment and vehicles and civilian engineering equipment. A trench surrounds most of the camp, and four watch towers are positioned along the trench. A helicopter, two mobile surface-to-air missile systems, an armored personnel carrier, military cargo trucks, and armed gunmen are also present.
  • The group monitors the site for a couple hours, planning to wait until night before taking any action. However, a vehicle arrives at the compound and a meeting ensues that culminates with men going to the helicopter and departing the camp. Martin is able to modify the shortwave radios he stole from the hospital in Ain Salah to eavesdrop on communications from the camp. Marcus and Adrian are able to translate the communications. They realize the men manning the helicopter are searching for the group’s truck.
  • The group contacts Jack and tell him to get away from the truck and hide. Jack moves the truck, pumps the Mossad agent full of pain killers, and starts up the mountain so he can rendezvous with the rest of the group.
  • The group watches as the helicopter circles around the mountains, searching for the truck. Hoping to cause a diversion, Marcus shoots a massive fuel container, causing it to explode and taking a cargo truck with it. The camp erupts into chaos. Someone from the camp radios the helicopter and tells the pilot to return to the area around the camp to search for the attackers.
  • Marcus snipes one of the gunmen at the camp while Lincoln finds a rocky outcropping close-by where the group can hide. As the helicopter approaches, the group hides under the outcropping. As it passes by, the group takes aim. Marcus and Lincoln shoot at the helicopter, but do little more than superficial damage. Martin, however, takes aim with an AK-47 he took from the Algerian soldiers the group fought in Reggane. He unloads most of the magazine, and his aim is true as a he scores a direct hit on the helicopter’s fuel tank. The helicopter bursts into a massive fireball.
  • Someone calls out on the radio from the camp below, instructing the gunmen that the attackers must be armed with rocket-propelled grenades or a missile launcher. Groups of gunmen start gathering together in the military cargo trucks and leaving the camp, presumably to search for the attackers. However, the only way out of the camp via vehicle is the east – the direction opposite of the group. This leaves the camp with only a handful of gunmen to protect it.
  • Seeing their window of opportunity, the group decides to assault the camp. Lincoln leads the group down the mountainside, using his stealth training to help the others stay hidden from the gunmen in the watchtowers.
  • When the group arrives at the camp, they split up. Marcus stays behind, so he can use his sniper rifle to pick off gunmen from afar. Martin and Adrian move toward a cargo truck and the armored personnel carrier positioned at the camp’s entry control point, and Lincoln moves to the closest watchtower.
  • Lincoln initiates the assault by sneaking into the watchtower and firing on a gunmen. Martin and Adrian follow-suit. Adrian sneaks up to the cargo truck and kills an unsuspecting guard. Martin shoots the gunman who had been manning the armored personnel carrier’s turret and then moves to replace him. Marcus continues to snipe gunmen in the camp.
  • The gunmen who had been operating the mobile surface-to-air missile systems drive toward the watchtower Lincoln attacked and position the mobile systems behind huge dump trucks. However, a portion of the missile systems protrude above the dump trucks’ beds, giving Lincoln just enough of a target. He fires on the exposed missiles, detonating one, which sets off a chain reaction that results in the explosion of the vehicle, while also “cooking off” the remaining missiles which fire ballistically into the night sky.
  • As Martin mans the armored personnel vehicle’s turret, he leaves himself exposed to two gunmen, they open fire. Hitting him with a pair of rounds. His bulletproof vest absorbs the rounds, but he’s still stunned by the attacks. He tries to return fire with the turret’s machine-gun, but his unfamiliarity with the system and his injuries limit his accuracy. The gunmen return fire again, and their attacks are well aimed. Three more rounds strike Martin, the last one knocking him unconscious.
  • A previously unseen gunmen emerges from the camp’s command post building, rushes out to the remaining mobile missile launcher, and the vehicle’s driver speeds away for the camp’s entrance. The driver tries to smashes into a gate and a pile of sandbags, but is eventually able to recover and flee from the battle.
  • Adrian braves gunfire from the remaining gunmen in the watchtowers, moves to the armored personnel carrier, pulls Martin out of the turret, flees to a cargo truck, and speeds across the camp to try to find cover.
  • Lincoln and Marcus focus their attacks on the remaining gunmen, killing all but one. He jumps out of the watchtower and escapes on foot from the camp.
  • By the end of the battle, the group had destroyed a fuel tank (which resulting in also blowing up a cargo truck and its driver), the helicopter, one of the mobile missile systems, and gunning down about a dozen guards. Only Martin had sustained damage. Although his bulletproof vest protected him from the worst of the damage, he was still knocked unconscious. Marcus’ first aid skilled proved critical in stabilizing Martin.

Operation GERBOISE

Session 14

Session Date: 11 April 2012

Players: Brad, Braon, Lenora, Lex

Location: Ain SAlah, Algeria

Game Date: 24 August

Game Time: 0400

  • Martin joins Lincoln, Adrian, and Jack as they discuss their plans. Jack convinces the rest of the group to give him a couple more hours to work on the Mossad agent. Adrian stresses that the group shouldn’t tell Marcus the true about the rebels – that they’re actually a branch of Al Qaeda.
  • Lincoln tells the rest of the group he’s going back to the hotel to set up a safe-house in case they are attacked by either the military or the rebels.
  • Martin finds equipment in the hospital he can use to set up closed circuit security video cameras. He joins Lincoln in the hotel room and monitors the cameras for activity.
  • Marcus continues to provide help wherever he can to the doctors in the hospital’s emergency room.
  • Jack makes little progress on improving the Mossad agent’s health during the next hour.
  • Rocket and mortar attacks continue to rain down on the town, getting closer and closer to the hospital and hotel.
  • One of the rockets strike the front of the hotel, destroying one of the emergency room walls, injuring people, and causing chaos.
  • Marcus tries to help calm the situation down.
  • Martin sees a group of rebels leaving the hospital. The group includes a couple young men armed with weapons, but it also includes women and children strapped with suicide vests. At about the same time, Marcus leaves the hospital for the hotel and sees the group. He realizes what’s going on and attacks. Lincoln quickly moves to help him. Adrian also goes out onto the street to investigate.
  • Marcus and Lincoln take out the gunmen. Adrian is able to calm the women and children down, and the trio moves the women and children to the hotel.
  • Jack is able to make some progress on the Mossad agent and feels comfortable moving him to the hotel.
  • The group sets up in two different rooms in the hotel. In one room, Martin – with Jack’s assistance – works to bypass the anti-tamper device on the suicide vest. When he is able to remove the vest from one of the women, he gives the vest to Marcus.
  • Marcus takes the vest, rushes into the hospital’s cafeteria where the gunmen were building bombs and organizing their strategy, and tosses the suicide vest into the middle of a pile of explosives that were meant to be used for the creation of improvised explosive devices. Marcus flees from the hospital and uses a remote detonator designed by Martin. The suicide vest explodes, taking a significant portion of the hospital with it.
  • Back at the hotel, Jack is able to come up with a technique that will assist Martin in defusing the vests, but Martin is still forced to manually remove each vest – a very dangerous feat. However, is successful in removing all the vests from the women and children.
  • With the Mossad agent stable and with a significant cache of medical supplies thanks to Lincoln’s earlier work, the group steals a cargo truck and heads out of the south side of town into the barren desert landscape. The group is successfully able to navigate the difficult terrain, avoiding the military checkpoint that was setup on the southern road out of town.
  • Clear of the checkpoint, the group makes their way back onto the southern road and heads for Ekker, where they hope to find answers about the Red Sickle’s plans in Algeria.

Operation GERBOISE

Session 13

Session Date: 29 March

Players: Brad, Lenora, TJ

Location: Reggane, Algeria (Abandoned French bunkers used for nuclear testing near the modern day Algerian Air Force Base in Reggane)

Game Date: 24 August

Game Time: 0200

  • The group begins driving toward Ekker. Jack is very concerned about the Mossad agent, knowing that he needs medical attention soon if he has any chance to live. Jack, Marcus, and Lincoln also have serious injuries.
  • Martin does a little research and learns that the town of Ain Salah, which is on the way to Ekker, has a decent sized hospital. The group decides to investigate the hospital – either with the intention of sneaking inside and leaving the Mossad agent or stealing the medical supplies necessary for Jack to heal him.
  • The group arrives on the western edge of Ain Salah at 0200 in the morning. A checkpoint has been set up by the Algerian military. A tank, piece of towed artillery, and a few jeeps are situated around the checkpoint with around 10 soldiers. Strangely, the focus of the checkpoint appears to be keeping the populace of Ain Salah from leaving.
  • The group is stopped at the checkpoint and questioned. Adrian spins a tale about being reporters investigating the Arab Spring and finding the injured Mossad agent on the side of the road. She says they’re looking for medical help. The guard seems suspicious and asks a few pointed questions. Marcus responds by gassing the car and navigating through the checkpoint. The guards are slow to respond, eventually shooting at the car but doing little damage.
  • On their way through town, the group spots a firefight between the Algerian military and what appear to be civilians. When they arrive at the center of town, near the hospital and a sizable hotel, they see pickup trucks that have been converted into makeshift weapon platforms with machine guns attached to their beds. The trucks are parked in the hospital courtyard.
  • At the hospital, the group is met by a pair of civilian guards wielding a hunting rifle and a revolver. Adrian is able to convince them to allow the group entrance into the hospital. Once inside, the group sees that the hospital is reacting to a high number of injured civilians who have apparently been injured in the fighting with the military.
  • Marcus and Jack head for the emergency room, where most of the seriously injured are being tended. Lincoln sneaks off, looking for medical supplies. Martin spends most of his time in the lobby of the hospital, which has been converted to a triage area. And Adrian looks around, asking for volunteers from the civilians to speak to her about their plight and why they are at odds with the military.
  • Jack is eagerly received by the local doctors. They give him some space to work on the Mossad agent. Marcus moves around the emergency room, helping as best he can with the various injured patients.
  • Adrian is told to head to the cafeteria, where the militant civilians are clustered together. There she is greeted by a guard who then takes her to the group’s leader, Hakeem. On the way to Hakeem, Adrian takes in the sights of the militant group of civilian fighters. She sees men studying maps, cleaning their weapons, etc but she also sees a disturbing site across the room. Huddled in the far end of the cafeteria are women and children who are being fitted with suicide vests. Adrian also notices some of the men building what appear to be IEDs. When she speaks to Hakeem, he reveals the group is part of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (better known in the west as Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb). He seems genuinely appreciative that someone from the West is concerned with their fight against the Algerian government.
  • Shaken by the encounter, Adrian seeks out Lincoln for his advice. She and Lincoln speak briefly, and then he heads to the nearby hotel in hopes of finding a place where they can relocate. He breaks into a hotel room, and then returns to the hospital to get the others.
  • Adrian and Lincoln find Jack and tell him about the Al Qaeda group that is using women and children as weapons. Jack doesn’t seem to pay too much attention as he’s completely focused on saving the Mossad agent’s life. Lincoln insists the group needs to leave – with or without the Mossad agent, and Adrian agrees. Jack refuses to leave unless the group can acquire the complex medical instruments he needs to continue his medical attention. An uneasy standoff ensues, wherein Lincoln and Adrian are hesitant to steal the items from the emergency room. They are concerned that without the medical supplies, the Algerian doctors won’t be able to tend to their own grievously injured patients.
  • At this point Martin walks into the emergency room to see what’s going on. Marcus knows the trio are having an intense conversation, but he’s too busy helping the doctors to engage the others. Adrian is also concerned that if Marcus finds out what’s going on, he would likely want to confront the Al Qaeda group.

Mission 003

Operation GERBOISE

Session 12

Session Date: 1 March

Players: Brad, Braon, Lenora, Lex, TJ

Location: Reggane, Algeria (Abandoned French bunkers used for nuclear testing near the modern day Algerian Air Force Base in Reggane)

Game Date: 23 August

Game Time: 2100

  • The group is hesitant to get involved with the gunfight until they see one of the Mossad agents get injured. Jack quickly moves to his aid, while Marcus and Lincoln start to engage the Algerian soldiers.
  • Martin and Adrian stay in the rear, occasionally providing cover fire or attacking targets when they present themselves. Marcus leads the assault, moving forward to get a line of sight on the Algerians. Lincoln sneaks forward quietly, trying to gain cover against the gunmen. Jack and the other Mossad agent help the fallen Israeli.
  • Moments after Marcus moves into place, he is stabbed from behind. Marcus turns and realizes his attacker stabbed him not with a knife but with some sort of dagger-shaped ivory or cartilage that extends from his arm in place of a hand. The attacker also wears a mask that covers what appears to be a strange, elongated face.
  • In his attempt to save his companion, the other Mossad agent is grievously injured. The first Mossad agent is gunned down dead, but Jack is able to provide near-miraculous first aid to the second in order to keep him alive.
  • The gunfight continues, with Marcus, Lincoln, and Jack all taking serious wound, but with the group emerging victorious. During the fight the Mossad agent who lived tells the group that he thinks Red Sickle’s main plans were centered on Ekker, the other location where the French tested nuclear materials in Algeria. He says that the plan was to store the nuclear material from Germany at Reggane, to take readings on it, and then move it to Ekker. He told them there may be military members of the local base who were suppose to help with the operations (perhaps with logistics). He also says “Be careful of your path. You don’t know anything about the Basement. It’s terrible. Get out now before it’s too late.”
  • The group flees the bunker with the injured Mossad agent, taking the Toyota truck.
  • As they exit the bunker they see that the Algerian military is responding. Two jeeps and a helicopter are in route to the bunker.
  • The group flees on the road between the air force base and Reggane. Some sharpshooting results in the group shooting out the tires of the jeeps. They also find a man-portable surface-air-missile stashed in the Toyota (their guess was the truck belonged to the Mossad agents). The missile detonates near the helicopter but doesn’t destroy it.
  • The chase continues, with the Toyota eventually being damaged to the point that it can’t be used. Meanwhile, the group is able to deal substantial damage to the helicopter, forcing it to return to base.
  • The group finds an old sedan in a small village nestled in a nearby oasis. They pile in and head back to Reggane.
  • Some quick research reveals the best route to Ekker from Reggane.

Mission 003

Operation GERBOISE

Session 11

Session Date: 16 February

Players: Brad, Braon, Lenora, Lex, TJ

Location: Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations directorate, Special Agent in Charge Principle Field Office – Atlanta, GA.
Game
Date: 18 August

Game Time: 0700

The group decides to split up. Marcus, Adrian, and Jack will head to Algeria, posing as a team of investigative reporters for the Washington Post. They are ostensibly in Algeria to cover the Arab Spring.

  • Martin and Lincoln stay behind so Martin can have more time to try to track down whoever is associated with the email address: typhon@yongbyon.pk. Martin is unsuccessful, and in fact it is possible due to high levels of security that the owner of the email address may have detected hacking attempts.
  • The first group travels to Italy and then Morocco via plane. When they arrive in Morocco they rent a jeep and drive cross country until they reach the Morocco-Algeria border near the town of Figuig, Morocco. After crossing into Algeria, the group is forced to pay a local man (Ahmed Itbir) for his services as a driver. He takes them to Reggane.
  • Between Adrar and Reggane, palm groves, true oases of green in the immensity of the ochre sand, succeed each other. All along the way, one is aware of the official policy of “bringing the desert back to life”: small palm trees have been planted at regular intervals and are watered, drop by drop, by an efficient system.
  • The palm groves are supported by an ingenious irrigation system, the carefully maintained result of ancestral practices. These underground canals—the “fogaras”— give life to this mineral universe. Through the generations, the inhabitants have learned to preserve water as a great wealth. At a time when the developed world is beginning to understand the necessity of safeguarding this indispensable resource, the ingenuity of the palm grove “gardeners” should be an example.
  • In Reggane, the group seeks out a hotel and audience with the town leader. They speak with a sheik who also serves as the mayor, Amza Ibiza. Amza knows about the nuclear testing at Reggane, as he worked at the facility in the 1960s when the French used the site. Amza is friendly and helpful, but doesn’t know any influential contacts at the modern day Algerian Air Force base near the Reggane nuclear test site ruins.
  • The group spends most of the day in Reggane and they are eventually joined by Martin and Lincoln. That night they approach the southern edge of the Algerian air force base where the French long ago abandoned bunkers that were used during nuclear testing at Reggane.
  • Under the cover of darkness the group easily slips through the rudimentary security at the airfield. They quickly spot a Toyota truck near one of the old French bunkers. The truck appears to be a rental – or at least very well kept, with little sign of extended exposure to the desert climate.
  • The group stealthily moves into the bunker. Inside they hear talking, probably in Arabic, but they aren’t quite sure. They decide to leave the bunker but suddenly a gunfight erupts within the bunker. They investigate and learn that the two Mossad agents they met in Moscow (Javad Akbari and Kamal Jalili) are engaged in a gunfight with Algerian soldiers.

CLASSIFIED//TRU EYES ONLY

Mission 003: OPERATION GERBOISE

Assignment: Inspect Reggane, Algeria and determine its ties to Red Sickle

Reggane (26°42′N 0°10′E ) is a town in the Adrar Province of central Algeria, in the Sahara Desert. It is the southernmost town of the Tuat.

In the proximity of Reggane there was until 1965 a rocket launching site where numerous civilian and military ballistic rockets were launched. France began its nuclear testing program in the vicinity of Reggane and conducted 4 in 1960 and 1961, during the Algerian War (1954–62), before independence. The climate is extremely arid and known for very high summer temperatures. On 12 July 2002 the highest official temperature was 48.9 °C.

Reggane is the last town on the Tanezrouft track heading south across the Sahara to Mali. Customs and police inspection here are mandatory before crossing the Sahara.

Gerboise Tests

Gerboise Bleue (“blue jerboa”) was the name of the first French nuclear test. It was an atomic bomb detonated in the middle of the Algerian Sahara desert on 13 February 1960, during the Algerian War (1954–62). General Pierre Marie Gallois was instrumental in the endeavor, and earned the nickname of père de la bombe A (“father of the A-bomb”). The chief scientist for the project was Dr. Andre DePaul.

Gerboise is the French word for jerboa, a desert rodent found in the Sahara, while blue is the first color of the French tricolor flag. So the second and third bombs were named respectively “white” (Gerboise Blanche) and “red” (Gerboise Rouge), the remaining colors of the flag.

With Gerboise Bleue, France became the fourth nuclear power, after the United States, the USSR, and the United Kingdom. Gerboise Bleue was by far the largest first test bomb up to that date, larger than the American “Trinity” (20 kt), the Soviet “RDS-1” (22 kt), or the British “Hurricane” (25 kt). The yield was 70 kilotons, bigger than these three bombs put together.

In comparison, Fat Man, the Nagasaki bomb, was 22 kilotons, one-third as powerful.

Subsequent tests:

13 February 1960: Gerboise Bleue (“blue jerboa”) 70 kt
1 April 1960: Gerboise Blanche (“white jerboa”) 5 kt
27 December 1960: Gerboise Rouge (“red jerboa”) 5 kt
25 April 1961: Gerboise Verte (“green jerboa”) 1 kt

Mission 002: Operation DIRTY RAIL [Epilogue]

Mission 002: Operation DIRTY RAIL [Epilogue]

  • Jack travels with police to the main precinct station in Hamburg. Over the course of the next few days, he works with their doctors and forensic scientists to investigate Tashika Katruta’s body. They confirm the burn marks are of radiological origin and that there have been crude attempts to graft skin over the burn marks. He has clearly been exposed to consistently high levels of radiation in the past. However, the doctors are baffled by the fact that he exhibits no tell-tale signs of cancer induced from the radiological exposure. In fact, he has absolutely no sign of any sort of typically common illnesses or disease that you would expect to see in a man of his age. A detailed investigation of his fingers reveal stretch marks in the skin,. Also, there appears to be degenerated bone, tissue, etc where his missing knuckles should have been. It’s not clear what happened, but Jack and the other doctors reach the conclusion that he was actually born with normal fingers and they were somehow altered later in life. Also of note is the cartilage throughout his body is significantly stronger than normal, while still retaining its flexibility. There is no clear consensus among the doctors about what has happened to Tashika, but many of them propose possibilities that draw from various similar but less drastic known medical conditions. Jack is unconvinced. The entire time he conducts the investigation he can’t help but shake an odd feeling about Tashika – that something doesn’t add up about the whole situation. He’s had this feeling before, when he’s noticed fleeting images out of the corner of his eye, or had a strange tingling sensation before something truly odd or unusual has occurred.
  • Meanwhile Lincoln helps the local police conduct the interrogation of the gunman and the truck driver. The truck driver doesn’t seem to know much. He was hired by an “exotic” woman who looked like perhaps she was from the Russian Far East. She spoke fluent German but with a slight Russian accept. Lincoln quickly deduces that he’s probably referring to Natalia Karnof, one of the six members of Red Sickle. Natalia hired the truck driver and two of his buddies. He was simply told to go to a pre-arranged destination near Gorleben, Germany, pick up some specialized cargo and transfer it to the port in Hamburg. The truck driver has an extensive criminal history, that includes theft, armed robbery, etc. The worst of his crimes was human trafficking. He had multiple warrants for his arrest. The other truck drivers had similar backgrounds. He doesn’t know anything else about the cargo, Red Sickle, etc.
  • The gunman (Danil Titov) can provide a little more information. He was trained by the Red Sickle at the Russian training camp that the group raided. He – like many of Red Sickle’s trainees – was a poor youth who wanted money and was disillusioned with his lot in life and post-Cold War life. He is originally from Moldova. Most of the Red Sickle’s recruits are drawn from Russia, Belarus, Moldova, Armenia, and the Central Asian countries. They typically share a hardline support for communist beliefs and feel the oligarchs who rule Russia and the former Soviet Union, coupled with “capitalism” is why they and their families now live in poverty. The overall motivation espoused by Red Sickle to their recruits is the overthrow of governments and a return to communism.
  • The gunman had met two members of Red Sickle: Santin Yuchenko (the leader of the cell) and Tashika. Santin ran the training camp in Russia, which is why the gunman knew him. The gunman can also confirm that Santin used the call sign “Sickle 1” when communicating with others via radio, strongly suggesting that Santin was the one calling the shots at the camp when the group raided it. The gunman doesn’t know a lot more about Santin.
  • The gunman was much more familiar with Tashika. After “graduating” from the Red Sickle’s training facility, the gunman, along with 3 others – the other gunmen you killed – were assigned to be Tashika’s personal team. In recent weeks they had been working extensively on coordinating the arrival of the Hanjin Ottawa at Hamburg. The gunman isn’t very knowledgable about the specifics, but from what he understands, Hanjin Shipping is a Korean front company used by Red Sickle – or maybe even someone Red Sickle is working for. The gunman does know that the Hanjin Ottawa was go to travel to Algiers, Algeria. He had also heard rumor that from Algiers, the cargo was to be taken to a place called Reggane. He wasn’t sure where exactly Reggane is, but he got the impression it was in Algeria too.
  • When Lincoln further interrogates the gunman about his contact, Lincoln is able to tell that the gunman was being honest and forthcoming with his initial answers. However, Lincoln’s demeanor and intensity (I’m rolling an investigation + intimidation with bonuses from your profession cop skill) seems to really rattle the gunman. It’s almost as if Lincoln’s shear force of will breaks the guys down. He seems desperate to provide some sort of information. He nervously starts spouting off nonsensical minute details – anything he thinks Lincoln might want to hear. While doing so, it seems to job some near-forgotten memory. “Wait…yea, I remember now…that place, Reggane, I – I think it was in Algeria. I remember the boss saying something about a French scientist working there. Maybe it was Dr. DePaul. Yes – that’s it, Dr. Andre DePaul. He was suppose to be at the port in Algiers to meet the ship and escort the cargo back to Reggane.” Finally, the gunman says one more thing of note to Lincoln. When pushed about the Red Sickle, the gunman leans in and whispers – as if scared – and says, “I don’t really know why, but the big boss – Santin [Yuchenko] – he always wore a full ski mask and gloves. We always wondered if he was like Tashika…you know, deformed or whatever. But none of us ever got close enough to find out.”
  • The Department B debrief is pretty rough. First off, flights out of Europe are cancelled for a couple days while authorities investigate the train explosion and the attempted theft of materials at Hamburg. During this time the group is contacted once by Shepherd. He checks in on you, but doesn’t address any mission specifics, even on a secure line. He’s obviously concerned that authorities are eavesdropping on transmissions because of the terrorist attack. However, it’s obvious that Shepherd is stressed and he sounds very tired.
  • When the group returns to Atlanta a few days later, they are met at the airport by Shepherd. He escorts them to the DHS office in Atlanta and to the Department B secret basement facility. Then an extensive debrief begins. He seems even more haggard and tired than usual. And the tell-tale smell of alcohol is more obvious than even before.
  • For the most part, Shepherd just listens, but when the group presents leads and information, he immediately leaves the room and tells the group that he’s passing it to Department B’s intel support. It’s clear to the group that the mission went well beyond what Department B had expected, and Shepherd even admits as much. He actually apologizes to the group and admits that Department B had underestimated the threat and poorly resourced the group (both in regards to finances and information). However, he says that this thread of Red Sickle and its ties to North Korea (the email reference to Yongbyon), Pakistan (again, the fact that the email is from .pk – or Pakistan’s country code), South Korea (Hanjin Shipping as a front company), Russia and the former Soviet Union (Red Sickle), and Algeria (destination for the ship) has become Department B’s number one priority. While it is possible that by interrupting the shipment, the group has successfully thwarted Red Sickle’s attempt to gain nuclear material, the fact is apparently Red Sickle is involved with a number of nuclear powers.
  • Here is the result of Department B’s intelligence unit’s investigation into the information you provide:
  • Department B is able to dig up a little information about the Israeli agents you met in Russia. They are Mossad operatives who operate in Russia, conducting nuclear-related human intelligence. They are both ethnic Persians and are used by the Mossad because of their ability to pose as Iranians. Their names are Javad Akbari and Kamal Jalili. They are associated with an Israeli front company called Iran Air.
The intel guys are unsure of the exact purpose of the worldwide nuclear test map. Here is the map, if you’re interested.
  • A quick investigation of the geo-coordinates of the three locations from the laptop indicate they are all continuity of government or command and control facilities.
  • Raven Rock Mountain Complex
    39.734,-77.419
The Raven Rock Mountain Complex (RRMC ) is a United States government facility on Raven Rock, a mountain in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It is located in Liberty Township, Adams County, about 14 km (8.7 mi) east of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, and 10 km (6.2 mi) north-northeast of Camp David, Maryland. It is also called the Raven Rock Military Complex, or simply Site R . Other designations and nicknames include “The Rock”, NMCC-R (National Military Command Center Reservation), ANMCC (Alternate National Military Command Center), AJCC (Alternate Joint Communications Center), “Backup Pentagon”, or “Site RT”; the latter refers to the vast array of communication towers and equipment atop the mountain. Colloquially, the facility is known as an “underground Pentagon”. The facility runs more than 38 communications systems for its users. The Defense Information Systems Agency computer operations staff provides computer services to the National Command Authority, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Office of the Secretary of Defense and other United States Department of Defense agencies. Its largest tenant is the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. RRMC also houses the emergency operations centers for the Army, Navy and Air Force.
  • Sentralanlegget
